WASHINGTON - Osama bin Laden, the face of global terrorism and architect of the attacks of September 11, 2001, was killed in a firefight with U.S. forces elite Monday, then quickly buried at sea at one end of an impressive decade sneak in the race.

Bin Laden was shot in the head, authorities said, after he and his bodyguards resisted the assault.Three adults were also killed in the operation, including a son of bin Laden, whom officials did not name. Obama said the remains were handled in accordance with Islamic tradition, which requires rapid burial.
the death of bin Laden represents a psychological triumph in a long struggle that began well before September 11. Al-Qaeda was also blamed for the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa that killed 231 people and the 2000 attack on the USS Cole that killed 17 American sailors in Yemen, as well as numerous other plots, some well successful and some aborted. In all, about 3,000 were killed in the attacks of September 11 almost 10 years ago, the worst terrorist attack on American soil.Moments after the announcement of Obama's late-night drama on Sunday, the State Department warned of the possibility of increased anti-American violence. In a travel alert worldwide, the department said there was a "greater potential for violent anti-American counter-terrorism given the recent activity in Pakistan."As news spread of bin Laden's death, hundreds of people cheered and waved American flags at Ground Zero in New York, where al-Qaeda hijacked planes toppled the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Thousands celebrated the whole night outside the gates of the White House. At daybreak the crowd had shrunk yet still ran some to be a part of it. A couple people posed for pictures in front of the White House, keeping the pages of newspapers Monday announcing the death of bin Laden."It's a moment that people were expecting," said Eric Sauter, 22, a student at the University of Delaware, who headed to Washington after seeing television coverage of the celebrations.

Whatever the global repercussions, the death of bin Laden marked the end of a manhunt that consumed more than a decade that began in the early dark hours after hijackers flew planes bin Laden against the World Trade Center twin in New York and the Pentagon, across the Potomac River in Washington. A fourth plane was seized by passengers overcame the hijackers and forced the plane to fall in the Pennsylvania countryside.
